"Oliver Hamby, a student of [Maryville College], under Dr. Hill Shine began a collection of ballads of Appalachia. He did not have a music background. When Dorothy Horne came to MC, it was suggested that she go out with Hamby and notate the music. Hamby, who was gifted in finding and getting cooperation from country people, made appointments to visit and to transcribe the remembered ballads. [Dorothy] Horne would notate the music, frequently on the back of the written ballad. [She] did an article on the ballads which was published in the Tennessee Folklore Society Bulletin November 1938." (from M.G.P.'s notes on a telephone conversation with Dr. Dorothy Horne, February 8, 1990).
